Boast in the Lord

I was reading through Jeremiah the other week and this section really caught my eye. I dwelt on it while I prayed and just though about its truth. Jeremiah 9:23-24 talks about boasting and it hits a truth we just want to ignore, but we cannot. Take a look:

Jeremiah 9:23-24 23 This is what the Lord says: The wise man must not boast in his wisdom; the strong man must not boast in his strength; the wealthy man must not boast in his wealth. 24 But the one who boasts should boast in this, that he understands and knows Me—that I am Yahweh, showing faithful love, justice, and righteousness on the earth, for I delight in these things. This is the Lord’s declaration.

Look at the first things God mentions, wisdom, strength, and wealth. These are the things people will typically boast in. They think it makes them special or gives them some sort of authority, but they do not realize the truth. Everything comes from God. You see the money you think of so fondly, that you think will protect you, comes from God. By His grace you are allowed to make money and succeed. The strength you have cultivated and acquired is not yours. God gives strength and power, because He is the only source of power. How about wisdom? What we know and can understand is all from God and we cannot comprehend even the smallest part of what God knows. Every good thing comes from God. Everything we think will protect us and that we worship. It is like boasting about borrowing a car. Sure, you can drive where ever you want, but the lender can take it back whenever he wants and then what will you do? That’s why God tells us to boast only in Him. To know and understand God is the best thing any person can achieve. It needs to be the goal of our lives, to know God. Not know as in I know He exists, but know as in I understand His character and desires. To really know a person, not just facts about the person. Part of His character is His faithful love, justice, and righteousness. We must learn His love, justice and righteousness and seek to apply it. Otherwise we boast about the air and have no security. Trust only in Jesus, not anything of man.
